Job Opening: Features Editor for TeenVoices.com - Changing the World for Girls Through Media (Massachusetts)

General Description

The Features Editor will be responsible for overseeing the volunteer college mentor component of the journalism mentoring and leadership program. To this end, s/he works with the volunteer coordinator to support the volunteer college mentors who work with the Teen Editors in the program. S/he guides the mentors through the editorial process, meeting with them as needed to shepherd progress on articles and to assist in the case of personal difficulties. S/he sometimes works directly with the teen girls by supporting them to run editorial meetings, coordinating workshops with visiting journalists, and facilitating the relationships between mentors and teens. This position reports to the Interim Editor.

Responsibilities:

Editorial

• Oversee creation of new content working with teens to develop proposals, and taking features throughout the editorial process, from proposal to completed feature, with the journalism mentoring teams (2 or 3 girls paired with a college mentor). This entails an editorial process with college and high school writers/editors, followed by a second edit to prep each piece for publication.
• Conduct editorial meetings with each mentoring group following their proposal, edit 1 and edit 2 proposals.
• Work with Interim Editor on a variety of projects.
Supervision and Mentoring
• Supervise and train the Teen Editorial Board to generate sufficient, appropriate content for teenvoices.com, and to develop both journalistic and organizational skills.
• Conduct editorial trainings and orientations for mentors and editorial interns, and teen editors covering such issues as editorial duties, media literacy and publication production.
Staff
• Work with Program Director to ensure coordinated programming.
• Attend staff meetings and share work.

Qualifications:

• Two to three years of experience in journalism with some experience in both print and online preferred.
• Ability to relate effectively to a culturally and economically diverse community of teenage girls and adults necessary.
• Experience working with college students and teens important.
• Ability to work independently and effectively toward multiple deadlines in different areas
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice essential including interest and commitment to progressive politics related to women and girls.
• Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, editorial style, and punctuation, including the ability to write in a clear and lively style.
• Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with everyone from co-workers to teens.
• Proficiency with online publishing platforms a plus.
• Strong comfort level with new media a plus.

Time Period: Half time position (20 hours) starting as soon as possible through May, 2011. Work afternoon hours from 2 – 6:30 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and 11-6:30 on Tuesdays.
