Nonfiction: Essays, photo feature, expose, interview/profile, personal experience. We are looking for straight journalism on any topic relating to childbirth as well as articles with a humorous style and personal experiences. We prefer articles to be no longer than 2000 words, any articles longer than that would probably need to have a narrower focus and may make two or more articles. This, however is a guideline only, every submission will be considered on its own merits. Byline given including contact info if desired. Query with or without published clips or send complete ms.
Length: 2000 words or less. Pays $25 for unsolicited articles and reprints, $40 for assigned articles.
Photos: State availability of photos on their own or with submission. Reviews contact sheets, email attachments, web page displays or hard copies. Buys exclusive electronic and print rights for 60 days, nonexclusive thereafter. We will attribute your work including your contact info. Pays $25-$50 per photo.
Poetry: We are looking for poetry dealing with childbirth, new babies, family life with new babies and creation. If your work evokes the image of the creation of life in some way, it doesn't necessarily have to specifically mention birth. Submit maximum 6 poems. Buys exclusive electronic and print rights for 60 days, nonexclusive thereafter. Pays $5 to $20 per poem.
Birth Stories: We are always interested in adding personal birth stories to our storehouse. These stories may be written from the viewpoint of the birthing woman or any family member or birth attendant. At this time we are not in a position to offer payment for birth stories. These stories are posted as they are written, with no editing, because we want the personality of each woman, or man, to shine through. We welcome any pictures you may have that you'd like to accompany your story.
Tips: Be sure to visit our web site before you make any queries or send a manuscript. See what kind of things we've already published, we won't want repeats of things we already have. Keep in mind though that often we have an article that addresses a subject in a broad manner and we will want to focus in on more specific aspects of that subject. For instance we may have an article already up on Medical Interventions During Birth, but we may be looking for something specific on epidurals or fetal monitoring. Don't hesitate to query with any idea dealing with childbirth.
