Reading Period Closes March 31st: PMS All-Women's Literary Journal

Post date: 12 March 2012
Deadline: 31 March 2012

PMS poemmemoirstory is a 140-page, perfect-bound, all-women’s literary journal published annually by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While we proudly publish the best work of the best women writers in the nation (i.e., Maxine Chernoff, Elaine Equi, Amy Gerstler, Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, Molly Peacock, Lucia Perillo, Sonia Sanchez, Ruth Stone, and Natasha Trethewey, Dr. Alison Chapman, Masha Hamilton and the Afghan Women’s Writing Project, Mary Jo Bang, Heather Dundas, Donna Thomas, Jennifer Horne, Jeanie Thompson, and Nancy Rutland Glaub, among others) we also solicit a memoir for each issue written by a woman who may not be a writer, but who has experienced something of historic significance.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

PMS will appear once a year and will accept submissions of poetry, memoir, and short fiction during our January 1 through March 31 reading period. Submissions received at other times of the year will be returned unread. While PMS is a journal of exclusively women’s writing, the subject field is wide open. We ask you that you limit your submission to either five poems or fifteen pages of prose (4300 words or less).

All submissions should be unpublished original work that we can recycle and be accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage for either return of your manuscript or notification. We will not acknowledge or return submissions not accompanied by SASE. Submissions should include a cover letter and a brief biographical statement of the writer. All manuscripts should be typed on one side only of 8 x 11 white paper with the author’s name, address, phone number, and email address on the front of each submission. Prose should be double-spaced; poetry may be single-spaced. Poems of multiple pages should indicate whether or not stanza breaks accompany page breaks.

Writers will receive two complimentary copies of the issue of PMS in which their work appears and a one-year subscription. Copyright returns to the author after publication in PMS, but work published elsewhere should acknowledge first publication in PMS poemmemoirstory. Writers whose work we accept for the magazine who have not yet done so will be asked to send a brief biographical statement and the accepted piece(s) of writing as an e-mail attachment in Microsoft Word to poemmemoirstory (at) gmail (dot) com.
