Free to Enter: Goethe Institut's Modern Grimm Fairy Tale Writing Competition (win a trip to/ language course in Germany | New Zealand writers only)

Deadline: 1 July 2012

This year is the 200th anniversary of the Brothers Grimm’s book of fairy tales. These storytelling treasures have influenced many of the greatest modern writers, including our own Katherine Mansfield and Janet Frame.

We invite you to write a Grimm fairy tale for modern Aotearoa New Zealand. Your story can work with local or international folktale elements, but please avoid a simple retelling of well-known tales from the world’s great mythologies – such as those involving Maui or Zeus or Odin.

However, you should feel free to try updating and relocating one of the famous Grimm stories, such as Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Snow White, Thumbelina, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella . . .

Or, if you like, one of the lesser-known stories – there are over 200 of them . . . Or, best of all, you can write something entirely original. We don’t insist on castles or elves or frogs that turn into princes, but we look forward to entries that have some of the magic and storytelling power that inhabits the tales handed down to us by the Brothers Grimm.

Your story must begin with the words “Once upon a time . . .”

Organised by the Goethe-Institut in association with the New Zealand Listener and the International Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University of Wellington.

PRIZES
  • There will be one winner and two runners-up.
  • The winner can choose between a four- or eight-week German language course in Germany in 2013 in one of 11 cities, including Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt. The prize includes flights and accommodation. It cannot be transferred or given in cash, but there is an alternative prize of a new iPad if the winner cannot travel to Germany.
  • The winner will also receive a 12-month subscription to the Listener, as will the two runners-up.
  • The winning story will be published in the Listener and the runners-up on the Listener website.

THE JUDGE

The judge is author and children’s books commentator Kate De Goldi, whose books include The 10PM Question, Book of the Year at the 2009 New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children & Young Adults.

WHO CAN ENTER
  • You must be a New Zealander by birth or naturalisation, or have been in residence in New Zealand for three years continuously immediately prior to the competition’s closing date.
  • No staff member of the Goethe-Institut, the New Zealand Listener or the International Institute of Modern Letters may enter.
  • Entrants must be 18 and over.

GUIDELINES
  • Your story should begin with the words “Once upon a time . . .”
  • The story must be between 1000 and 1500 words.
  • Stories that have been previously published (anywhere on the internet or in print) or broadcast are ineligible.
  • No story may be entered, or already have been entered, into any other competition until after Thursday, September 13, 2012.
  • Only one story per entrant. The last date to receive entries is Sunday, July 1, 2012. Late entries will not be accepted.

FORMAT
  • You must use a pen name on your entry. Include a separat cover-sheet containing your name, phone number, postal address and email, your pen-name, and the story’s title.
  • Entries must be typed, in English, and double spaced, with pages numbered.
  • Entries should be sent as two email attachments (Story and Coversheet) in either Word or PDF to arts@wellington.goethe.org

OTHER
  • Winners will be required to provide biographical information and photographs to the Goethe-Institut and the New Zealand Listener for promotional purposes.
  • Winners will be invited to attend an awards ceremony in Wellington on Thursday, September 13 (travel costs within New Zealand and accommodation paid).
  • No responsibility is taken for entries, but receipt of entries will be acknowledged by email.
  • Manuscripts will not be returned.
  • The winning entry will be published in the New Zealand Listener, and the two runners-up on the Listener website, on Friday, September 14.

Entrants retain copyright of their submitted works but grant APN Specialist Publications NZ Ltd and the Goethe-Institut a licence to publish their works in print and/or electronically.

SUBJECT MATTER, CASTING, AND PRODUCTION LIMITATIONS

KWWC is seeking new plays that can be produced as world premieres. We place no limitations on subject matter. However, KWWC espouses a feminism that creates economic equality, a violence-free society, and racial and ethnic justice, and we encourage art that envices a consciousness about the cultural inheritance of women's identity. Scripts may be based on factual events, purely fictional, or adaptations. KWWC encourages women writers not trained as playwrights to adapt their own fiction, nonfiction, or poetry for the stage. KWWC is not seeking one-man or one-woman scripts, musicals, or children's plays. Limitations:
  • Reading time must be in the range of 45-90 minutes.
  • Casts must be in the range of 2-6 actors, preferably with a majority female cast
  • Set, lighting, sound, costume, and prop requirements must be kept to a minimum. The producing theater has a modular stage (nine 8-foot by 4-foot platforms) with a stage height of 9 feet. Performance space is limited to 12-feet deep. The stage has no curtain and no off-stage wings. Adequate lighting and sound capabilities are available. Questions about performance space should be directed to the Balagula Theatre Company: theatre@balagula.com

JUDGING PROCESS AND CRITERIA

All entries will be screened by KWWC staff for completeness and adherence to contest guidelines. Judging will consist of two rounds. In round 1, a diverse panel of theater professionals and educators will choose 5 finalists. In round 2, Kia Corthron will choose 1 winner. Writer's Digest's Dear Lucky Agent Contest (Niche: Upmarket/ Women's/ Mainstream Fiction)

Deadline: 14 May 2012

(Note: the judge for the 10th edition is looking for mainstream and women’s fiction that is character-driven and/or has a strong social or emotional message and is delivered with a compelling and distinguishable prose style.)

Welcome to the 10th (free!) “Dear Lucky Agent” Contest on the GLA blog. This is a recurring online contest with agent judges and super-cool prizes. Here’s the deal: With every contest, the details are essentially the same, but the niche itself changes—meaning each contest is focused around a specific category or two. So if you’re writing a upmarket (see exactly what this term means below) novel, this 10th contest is for you! (The contest is live through May 14, 2012.)

WHY YOU SHOULD GET EXCITED

After a recent “Dear Lucky Agent” contest, the agent judge, Tamar Rydzinski (The Laura Dail Literary Agency), signed one of the three contest winners. After Tamar signed the writer, she went on to sell two of that writer’s books! How cool! That’s why these contests are not to missed if you have an eligible submission.

HOW TO SUBMIT

E-mail entries to newagentcontest@gmail.com. Please paste everything. No attachments.

WHAT TO SUBMIT

The first 150-200 words of your unpublished, book-length work of upmarket fiction. You must include a contact e-mail address with your entry and use your real name. Also, submit the title of the work and a logline (one-sentence description of the work) with your entry.

Please note: To be eligible to submit, I ask that you do one of two things: 1) Mention and link to this contest twice through any social media—blogs, Twitter, Facebook; or 2) just mention this contest once and also add Guide to Literary Agents Blog (www.guidetoliteraryagents.com/blog) to your blogroll. Please provide link(s) and notes with your entry so the judge and I can verify eligibility. Some previous entrants could not be considered because they skipped this step!

WHAT IS UPMARKET FICTION?

Throw out what you think the definition is. What THIS contest goes by is what the agent judge, Lauren Ruth, defines it as, as that is what she is seeking from prospective new clients. Here it is: “Lauren is looking for mainstream and women’s fiction that is character-driven and/or has a strong social or emotional message and is delivered with a compelling and distinguishable prose style. Examples of the types of women’s and mainstream fiction Lauren is looking for include MY SISTER’S KEEPER by Jodi Picoult, ROOM by Emma Donoghue, HOW TO TALK TO A WIDOWER by Jonathan Tropper and THE HOUR I FIRST BELIEVED by Wally Lamb.” (So there we have it.)

CONTEST DETAILS
  • This contest will be live for approximately 14 days—from April 30, 2012 through the end of Monday, May 14, 2012, PST. Winners notified by e-mail within three weeks of end of contest. Winners announced on the blog thereafter.
  • To enter, submit the first 150-200 words of your book. Shorter or longer entries will not be considered. Keep it within word count range please.
  • This contest is solely for completed book-length works of upmarket fiction.
  • You can submit as many times as you wish. You can submit even if you submitted to other contests in the past, but please note that past winners cannot win again.
  • The contest is open to everyone of all ages, save those employees, officers and directors of GLA’s publisher, F+W Media.
  • By e-mailing your entry, you are submitting an entry for consideration in this contest and thereby agreeing to the terms written here as well as any terms possibly added by me in the “Comments” section of this blog post. (If you have questions or concerns, write me personally at literaryagent@fwmedia.com. The Gmail account above is for submissions, not questions.)

PRIZES!!!

Top 3 winners all get: 1) A critique of the first 10 double-spaced pages of your work, by your agent judge. 2) A free one-year subscription to WritersMarket.com.

MEET YOUR (AWESOME) AGENT JUDGE!

Lauren Ruth started her publishing career as an intern at Simon & Schuster’s Touchstone/Fireside imprint while earning her B.A. in English language and literature from Pace University. Shortly thereafter, she completed her second internship at BookEnds, where she fell in love with the literary agency side of the publishing industry. In February 2011, she joined BookEnds as a full-time literary assistant, and very soon after began to build her own client list. She will soon have her master’s degree in book publishing. In fiction, Lauren is looking for: romance—all genres; literary fiction; commercial fiction, especially up-market, urban fantasy with romantic elements; middle-grade—all subgenres; young adult—all subgenres; mystery, with a strong focus on cozies; women’s fiction on the literary side; and smart chick lit, a la The Devil Wears Prada. On the nonfiction side, she’s looking for memoir, parenting and family, relationships, food and lifestyle, business, popular science, popular culture, and popular psychology.

2012 NFWL-NRA Bill of Rights National Essay Scholarship Topic: “The Constitution and States Rights: How Federalism Impacts Women and Historically Underrepresented Populations”

In the current Presidential election, candidates and political pundits have been particularly concerned with the role of states’ rights. Issues such as energy, education, and job creation have dominated the conversation, and many are questioning whether these issues should be addressed by individual states or the federal government.

The question of states’ rights versus the federal government has existed since the framers first sat down to draft our Constitution. Careful to establish checks and balances to avoid the emergence of a King, the framers emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of people to create legislation within their own states about issues that didn’t relate to the entire Union. The Tenth Amendment in the Bill of Rights, for example, established the principle of federalism — the term used to define the relationship between the states and the federal government.
Energy, education, job creation and other significant policy changes are at stake in the coming election. Each of these policy areas has a sizable impact on women and historically underrepresented populations.

GUIDELINES: This year’s essay topic is “The Constitution and States Rights: How Federalism Impacts Women and Historically Underrepresented Populations.” Write a 400-600 word essay on the role states should have in addressing a specific policy area being discussed today. The question to address is, what role do you believe the states should have in determining the future of a given policy area, based on your understanding of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution? How might women and minorities specifically be affected by decisions made at the state level versus decisions from the federal level?

For this essay, please choose one policy initiative from the following list, and determine how women and historically underrepresented populations would be specifically impacted should that issue be addressed at the state or federal level. (Note: topics must fall under one of the following policy areas in order to be considered.)

POLICY INITIATIVES:
  • Economic Empowerment & Job Creation
  • Energy & Environment
  • Individual Security & Privacy
  • Criminal Justice
  • Education
  • Nutrition & Wellness

For example, you might consider the impact education policy has on women and other historically underrepresented communities, and then decide whether you believe it should be addressed at the state or federal level based on your interpretation of states’ rights as enumerated within the Bill of Rights.

You may also consider the role special interest groups and non-governmental organizations play in shaping the debate on a specific policy area.

IMPORTANT: The Scholarship Committee will weigh four specific elements in submissions: In addition to the basics of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and writing style, the judges will be looking for essays with (1) historical research, insight and perspective, (2) demonstrated understanding of the American Constitution and Bill of Rights as a whole, (3) inspirational quality and (4) meaningful personal connection.

FORMAT: 400-600 words, single spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman. Please remember to submit two (2) copies.
