A new year for Teatro Luna brings not only a new theater space, but also the advent of new youth outreach in its Luna Labs programming, an incubation series offering workshops and training for playwrights, directors, and other theatre artists of color. Chicago’s Pan-Latina Theater company is announcing the 1st Annual Daughters of the Moon/Hijas de la Luna 10-Minute Play Competition. The women of Teatro Luna invite all self-identified girls of color ages 12-18 to submit their original 10-minute plays on the theme of Identity to be read by a panel of writers, performers, directors, educators, and experienced members of the arts community. A selection of finalists will receive a staged reading and be honored at an awards ceremony at Luna Central. A winner will have her short play run in repertory with Teatro Luna’s Fall Mainstage Solo Fest.
Teatro Luna will be accepting submissions until May 15, 2012 and announcing finalists in early June. The company is thrilled to be expanding its Luna Labs to include youth playwrights and create opportunities to empower the voices of young women in Latina and communities of color. Daughters of the Moon/Hijas de la Luna is the newest addition to the PlayLab component of Luna Labs, a workshop series designed to educate writers of various genres in the art of script writing, nurture Latina/Hispana-identified playwrights by providing a supportive environment for critique, development, and generation of new work. The lab is meant to provide a safe space for exploration and a fertile ground for experimentation with the art form.
WHO: Open to all girls of color who live in the Midwest and self-identify as girls of color up to the age of 18.
WHAT/WHEN: Inaugural Playwrighting competition for Midwest girls of color, Daughters of the Moon/Hijas de la Luna, hosted by Teatro Luna: Chicago’s Pan-Latina Theatre Company. Submission deadline is May 15, 2012.
