Women on the Land Writing Competition (New Zealand)

Do you have a story to tell or a poem to share about New Zealand farming women and their lives, either nowadays or from the past?

South Canterbury members of Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) are putting together a collection of writing with the theme “Women on the Land”, and are running a competition to find winning pieces to include.

FIRST PRIZE $500; SECOND PRIZE $250; THIRD PRIZE $100

PLUS OVER 50 POEMS/FICTION/NON-FICTION WORKS TO BE PUBLISHED
IN AN ANTHOLOGY OF WRITING

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

1. Submissions (fiction/non-fiction or poetry) must be the original work of the entrant, previously unpublished and not under consideration elsewhere. A suggested maximum length for fiction/non-fiction is up to 1,500 words (longer work might be considered). Poetry is suggested to be no more than 50 lines.

2. The theme is “Women on the Land”. We are looking for writing celebrating women and the role they are playing or have played on our land and in our rural community.
3. The editing team reserves the right to select work from the submissions received and will contact the writer to gain first publishing rights, but copyright will remain with the writer.

4. Contributors published in the anthology will receive a free copy in lieu of payment, and the right to order further copies at a special rate. Prizes to be presented at the launch of the anthology in Timaru in May 2012, or forwarded to the writer following the launch.

5. Winners and the writers of the chosen work for the anthology will be notified by email/telephone. All other entries will be destroyed, so please keep a copy.

6. The entry fee is $5 per poem/$10 per fiction/non-fiction and writers are welcome to enter more than once. The competition is open to all ages. The writer’s name must not appear on the manuscript. Please use the official entry form. Entries are to be typed single sided A4 paper and double-spaced. Photocopies are acceptable.

7. The Judging team (consisting of members of South Canterbury Rural Women NZ) will be led by Pleasant Point writer, Karalyn Joyce. The judging team’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. If there are insufficient suitable entries for the anthology to be successfully completed the team reserves the right to act accordingly and return all entry fees.

8. The competition opens on 21st May 2011. Closing date is 21ST August 2011.
