Polk County Women for Agriculture Constitutional (Student) Essay Contest

Polk County students, grades 9-12 are invited to enter the first annual Polk County Women for Agriculture Constitutional Essay Contest.

Essays should answer the question: Which do you think is the most important amendment to the Constitution in the Bill of Rights, and why?

In the event of a tie, please include on a separate sheet the answer to the following question in 150 words or less: What was the purpose of the Bill of Rights?

Prizes awarded will be 1st place $300, 2nd place $200, 3rd place $100. Each winner will also receive two books on the Constitution by Oregon author Mary Webster.

Every entry will receive a pocket copy of the Constitution and the top 10 entries from each school will be invited to the October 6, 2011 Constitutional Discussion in Rickreall where historical performers will answer questions from the perspective of their era. Each student attending may choose an adult (parent or teacher) to accompany them to the event.

Rules:

1. Contest is open only to Polk County students in grades 9-12, or the home school equivalent.
2. Each essay should be the sole product of the student’s work.
3. Each essay should be type written and no longer than 500 words. Submissions will be judged on understanding of the issue, clear thinking and writing, presentation, grammar and spelling.
4. Submissions should include the writer’s name, age, grade, school, home address, home telephone, and e-mail address. Winners will be notified by telephone.
5. Entries will not be returned. Entries may be published.
6. Essays must be postmarked or emailed by July 4, 2011.

Winners will be announced in September to coincide with Constitution Day, September 17. Constitution copies and books by Mary Webster provided by the Western Institute for Nature, Resources, Education and Policy, (WINREP).
