Women's Work Play and Screenplay Contest
I am a playwright. I also happen to be a woman, but I am not a woman playwright.
–Lillian Hellman, author of The Children’s Hour
Pride Films and Plays Women’s Work is a contest for writers who just happen to be women. Pride Films and Plays endeavors to enhance the visibility of women who write and offer them opportunities to be heard loud and clear. Or, in this case, loud and queer. The Women’s Work contest consists of two components: Sapphics on Stage and Sapphics on Screen.
Sapphics on Stage is a contest for work with lesbian characters, history, or themes for the theatre, including performance art or other performed pieces. Sapphics on Screen is a contest for work with lesbian characters, history, or themes for film and television.
The contests are open to all women whose writing is pertinent to the lesbian community and relevant to the world. Writers may submit two works for consideration. Contest finalists will receive a cash prize and a staged reading of their work in Chicago in June 2011. Applications are being accepted from February 1 through March 28, 2011.
Women's Work Contest
The Women's Work Contest has two categories: Sappics on Screen and Sapphics on Stage. The Sapphics on Screen Contest fosters excellence in work written by women for film and television; the Sapphics on Stage Contest fosters excellence in work written by women intended for live performance, including plays, performance art, monologues, and other performance pieces. All materials submitted must be written by a woman (or women) and have lesbian characters, history, or themes pertinent to the lesbian community and relevant to the world. Entry fee is waived if entry is received by February 10.
Entry fee is $15 if entry is received between February 11 and February 28. Entry fee is $20 if entry is received between March 1 and March 31. To make the final deadline, scripts must be received by 11:59 pm Central Time on March 31, 2011. If material was submitted to our Great Gay Play Contest or Great Gay Screenplay Contest, it can be resubmitted with no fee. However, resubmission is required because we have different reading panels for each contest. If making more than one entry, please complete a separate application for each. A $10 discount can be taken on the second entry. No more than 2 entries will be accepted from any writer.
