Job Opening: Assistant Food Editor for Family Circle (Meredith - New York)

The Assistant Food Editor:

• Participates in concept/story development
• Develops recipes for 15-issue per year schedule plus cookbooks, Special Pub projects and online collections
• Edits on-page content
• Oversees kitchen interns
• Acts as point person with outside vendors
• Writes heds, deks and captions for food edit
• Coordinates issue folders and organizes archived recipes
• Liaises with other publications and editors regarding test kitchen space and usage
• Organizes grocery deliveries and distributes ingredients to Associate Editor and Senior Editor

Essential Job Functions

60% - Provides editorial assistance for and creates food stories as assigned
30% - Writes copy for food pages
5% - Organizes kitchen schedules and manages supplies
5% - Remains current on all appropriate food-industry, consumer, and magazine industry trends.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience.
Culinary degree, or comparable work experience in similar environment

Experience:

Minimum 2 years experience writing and editing magazines, books, newspapers or online content, or directly related field.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of food and the ability to write and edit across this category
  • Practical knowledge of editorial production
  • Working knowledge of Macintosh computers and desktop publishing software very useful
  • Must be innately inquisitive, genuinely interested, and familiar with current consumer trends in food
  • Must be creative and have a strong conceptual ability
  • Must be able to work well with others, manage and set priorities for multiple projects, and take responsibility for schedules budgets, and quality of assigned projects
  • Must be able to work well under pressure and within time constraints
  • Excellent editing and writing skills required
