Announcing two new funding initiatives from the Southeastern Women's Studies Association (SEWSA) designed to support professional development and program-building for Women's and Gender Studies students and faculty members in the U.S. southeast:
(1) Dissertation Award ($1500)
(2) Mini-Grant Program ($500)
SEWSA is a feminist organization which actively supports and promotes all aspects of women's studies at every level of involvement. The organization is committed to scholarship and activism eliminating oppression and discrimination on the basis of sex, race, age, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic background, physical ability, and class. SEWSA is comprised of the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Applications are welcome starting immediately. The deadline for both awards is March 1, 2011.

SEWSA Dissertation Award This award is designed to assist graduate students who are members of SEWSA with research and professional development. Research should be consistent with the research mission of SEWSA to foster scholarship on and activism eliminating oppression and discrimination on the basis of sex, race, age, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic background, physical ability, and class. The award is $1,500 and can be used for travel, books, supplies, and/or equipment. Preference will be given to students who are active in SEWSA and receiving a Ph.D. from a university in the SEWSA region.
The application will consist of the following:
· A two-page proposal that addresses: a) the aim and purpose of the research, b) the methodology, and c) the significance of the research to the research mission of SEWSA
· An itemized budget of expenses to be covered by the award
· A one-page curriculum vita/resume
SEWSA Mini-Grant Program
This program is designed as an incentive and award for Women's and Gender Studies programs or departments represented by SEWSA to develop special events that will raise the visibility of the program/department on its campus and throughout the region. Past awards have supported lectures by feminist scholars and creative productions of feminist theater. Students and faculty members can apply for this award. Two awards of $500 each will be given each year. Publicity for the events must list SEWSA as one of the sponsors of the event. The proposal should include a description of the proposed event, an itemized budget, and an explanation of the event's significance to the mission of the program/department and to the organizational mission of SEWSA. Preference will be given to applications from active members of SEWSA.
Recipients must submit a report on the event to the President of the organization by September 1, 2011 (before the mid-year officer meeting in September).
