League of Women Voters' Essay Contest: The Limits of Freedom

PRIZES - First $500, Second $300

THE TOPIC: THE LIMITS OF FREEDOM. Recent Supreme Court decisions concerning gun control and campaign financing, the current California ballot proposition on marijuana, and recently enacted laws concerning texting and cell phone use are all part of a continuing national discussion on how to maintain personal freedoms while providing for the common good. Please discuss the tension between individual freedom and the needs of society, as it affects one or more contemporary political issues.

* Length: 600 - 800 words
* Due: November 10, 2010

* Submit your entry, double-spaced, as a pdf attachment or text within the email
* Include your name and school

Essays will be judged on development of topic, supporting information, reasoning and writing skills, and originality. Source material and direct quotes should be acknowledged.
