Win a Publishing Prize Package valued at $4,000 with the ParentsCanada Bedtime Story Contest

ParentsCanada Magazine is pleaZZZZed to announce a Bedtime Short Story Contest for aspiring writers. If you tell your kids the best-ever stories at bedtime, send it to us for your chance to win.

First prize is a Book Signing Publishing Package worth approximately $4,000 courtesy of Indigo and iUniverse, and a Booklovers prize from Indigo (approximate value $200). Second and Third place winners will receive Booklovers prize packages, each valued at $50.

Submission Guidelines:

1. Word count: 500 words

Finalist Judges:

Peter Carver

Peter Carver has worked in the Canadian publishing industry for 35 years, concentrating on books for children and teenagers. Currently he is editor of children’s and young adult literature for Red Deer Press, a position he has held since 1996. He was a teacher of Writing for Children courses at George Brown College since 1986 to 2011, and has given many other writers workshops, from St. John’s to Nanaimo. For 20 years he was the writer and editor of the Freedom to Read Week kit for the Book and Periodical Council. In 2007, Peter was honoured with the Claude Aubry Award for his distinguished contribution to children’s literature in Canada. He is a three-time winner of the Vicky Metcalf editor’s award, and the Lois Hole Award for editing. Peter lives in Rockwood, Ontario with his wife Kathy Stinson.

Ted Staunton

Since his 1983 debut with Puddleman, one of Canada’s most perennially popular picture books, Ted Staunton has been entertaining readers of all ages with his funny and perceptive stories of childhood and family life.
His many other books include Simon’s Surprise, the Morgan stories for grades 2-4 readers, the Dreadful Truth series of humorous looks at Canadian history, the Junior novel Hope Springs a Leak, and its YA sequel, Sounding Off. Trained as a teacher, Ted is also a speaker, performer, and workshop leader in venues across Canada. Kathy Stinson

Kathy Stinson grew up in Toronto, sorted mail, taught school and waited tables before figuring out, while at home with her two children, that what she really wanted to do was write. In the years since, she has published more than 30 titles – picture books, young adult novels, historical fiction, short stories, biography, and other non-fiction. Mother, stepmother, and grandmother, Kathy currently lives in Rockwood, Ontario with her partner, Peter Carver and their doodle, Keisha. More about Kathy is available at kathystinson.com

Frieda Wishinsky

Frieda Wishinsky is the international award-winning author of over 50 picture books, chapter books, novels and non-fiction. Her first picture book OONGA BOONGA is considered by many to be a "classic" of children's literature. Rules & Regulations

Contest begins at 9:30 am EST on February 15, 2012 and ends on March 22, 2012 at 11:59 pm EST.

1. Submissions must be no more than 500 words and must be a bedtime story geared toward children ages 3-8. Submissions over the allotted word count will be disqualified.

2. Submissions that are slanderous or offensive to any person or group will be disqualified.

3. Submissions must be original, unpublished material, not under consideration elsewhere.


4. Once a submission is received, no revisions will be allowed.
Limit one entry per person.

5. The contest is open to all legal residents of Canada (excluding the Province of Quebec), who have reached the age of majority in their province/territory of residence.

6. The contest is not open to people who have previously authored a published book.

7. Employees of Parents Canada, Family Communications and their affiliates, advertising and promotional agencies, or parties engaged in the development, production and distribution of materials related to this contest, and members of their immediate families and/or persons living in the same household are NOT ELIGIBLE to participate.

Selection Process:

1. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges listed above. Selected entrants will be contacted by email before April 30, 2012. Winners must respond to the email within five days or be disqualified. An alternate winner will then be selected from among all remaining eligible entries.

2. Selected entrants consent to the announcement of their name and the use of their story exclusively by ParentsCanada.

3. ParentsCanada reserves the right to edit and make necessary changes to submissions to fit with the magazine’s style. The final copy will be sent back to the writer for her/his records.

4. No correspondence pertaining to this contest will be entered into except with potential winners. The sponsors accept no liability for printing errors on material distributed for this contest.

5. Failure on the part of a selected entrant to comply with contest rules or whose prize notification is undeliverable may result in disqualification and an alternate winner may be selected from among all remaining eligible entries.
