Call for Submissions: Defenestration Magazine

Post date: 26 May 2011
Deadline: 5 August 2011

Eileen Lavelle, editor of Defenestration Magazine, sent to us this call for submissions of hilarious poetry, prose, nonfiction and "fake" nonfiction:

We don’t worry about the particulars of genre, style, or form as long as the work is funny. What exactly constitutes as “funny” varies from person to person, but we try to publish a wide range of humor, from the ridiculous to the satirical, and everything in between.

FICTION: Stories that are funny yet manage to exemplify their genre, or blend various genres into amusing and unique combinations. We’ve published literary fiction alongside science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and even period piece romances. No genre is off limits. Our reading period for fiction ends on August 5th.

POETRY: Both free-form poems and highly-structured poems. We’re just as likely to publish blank verse as we are sestinas, sonnets, and haikus. We’re also convinced that rhyming poetry isn’t quite as dead as some people would like to believe, but a well-crafted rhyme scheme is preferable over something more simplistic. Forced rhymes are a huge turnoff. Our reading period for fiction ends on August 5th.

To submit, send no more than one (1) short story or no more than five (5) poems to defenestrationmag(at)gmail(dot)com. The subject line of your e-mail should begin with “Defenestration Submission / Fiction” or “Defenestration Submission / Poetry.”

NON-FICTION: Non-fiction is published year-round. There are no reading periods for non-fiction.

Non-fiction includes what we call “fake” non-fiction. Think of it as fiction that reads like non-fiction. This can include anything from reviews of non-existent books, interviews with imaginary people, bogus letters to the editor, etc. Use your imagination. If you’re unsure whether your piece falls into this category, send it to us anyway. We’ll sort it out.
