State Rep. Brenda Kupchick, R-Fairfield, has launched a Women’s History Essay Contest in which all sixth graders in Fairfield are invited to write a 300-word essay on the topic “How a Connecticut Woman made a Contribution to the State and/or Nation and How it Affects me.”
The essay contest, in conjunction with Women’s History Month, is sponsored by Fairfield County Bank and Pequot Library. A winner and runner-up will be chosen by each school. The first-place winners will be awarded a $100 savings bond and the second-place winners will be awarded a $50 savings bond.
"The state of Connecticut truly has a rich past full of women who have shaped the history of our state, nation and world,” Kupchick said. “From Harriet Beecher Stowe, to Prudence Crandall, to Ella Grasso, there are so many important historical figures to choose from. Through this contest, I wanted to give an opportunity for Fairfield’s sixth grade students to demonstrate what inspires them and learn more about women in Connecticut s history.”
Submissions will be accepted and judged by each school’s administration based on form, style, research, grammar and insight. A ceremony will be held to recognize the winners on April 30 at Pequot Library.
The deadline for submissions to each school is April 11.
