Writer's Guidelines

Island Parent Magazine targets Vancouver Island parents with children aged newborn to 18 years.

Our editorial philosophy is based on the belief that parents need encouragement and useful information, not negative messages or guilt trips. Our publication includes a wide range of topics of interest to parents. We encourage writers to cover topics that are of interest to them or that reflect their own experience—we’re looking for a variety of perspectives, experiences and beliefs. Please keep in mind that our aim is to help our readers feel valued, supported and respected. Ideally, we can raise the profile of parenting and help create a community of healthy, happy families. If an article provides a welcome idea, pertinent information, a laugh or a poignant moment for our readers, we’re achieving our goal.

Up to half of the articles in any given issue of Island Parent Magazine are unsolicited manuscripts. We provide a vehicle on Vancouver Island for Canadian writers of varying degrees of ability and professional experience. Most of the articles published in our magazine are written by Vancouver Island writers. Readers appreciate learning about resources in their community so, when relevant, please include book titles, services or contact information pertinent to the topic. We do not consider articles that are, in fact, advertisements for products or commercial services.

Our average article length is 1000 words (3 columns) or 700 words (2 columns): if submitting a photo, cut the length by at least 100 words. We do not publish poetry or fictional stories. We pay an honorarium for first-time North American rights for use in Island Parent magazine, both in print form and in pdf format on our website (we also post a selection of articles in the Archives section of our website). We have partnered with the Kids In Victoria website as it shares our dedication to support parents in our region. A selection of articles will be posted on www.kidsinvictoria.com each month before being archived on www.islandparent.ca. Payment for articles is as follows:

• $35 for original articles for publication in Island Parent (both the magazine and the website)
• Additional $25 for those articles posted on www.kidsinvictoria.com

At the editor’s discretion, there will be no remuneration for articles that will benefit, even indirectly, the author’s service or business: this is discussed at the time of acceptance of an article. Manuscripts must be typed, double spaced, and must include the word count, writer’s name, address and daytime phone number on the first page. Please include a one-sentence bio that tells our readers who you are and, if relevant, how they can contact you.

Submissions must be made by e-mail. The editor will respond to submissions within six weeks of receipt.

Direct queries or manuscripts to Sue Fast, Editor, at editor [at] islandparent.ca or 250-388-6905.
