Job Opening: Writer and Researcher for Free the Children (Canada)

We are looking for someone who can work in collaboration with our senior leadership team to help them produce quality articles and related materials for various publications and media projects. The position requires all facets of journalism, from researching and interviewing to writing. Sometimes the articles the writer and researcher will produce will bebased on experiences abroad of our senior leadership team and at other times they will be analyses of international political, social and development issues.

The ideal candidate will have strong writing abilities, impeccable research and interview skills and a firm understanding of journalistic practices. The position is based out of the Free The Children office in Toronto. A minimum two-year commitment is expected with a negotiable salary and health benefits. Opportunities for housing accommodations are also available. The position is available as soon as possible.

Responsibilities:

• Research, interview sources, write and edit articles for print publications and/or scripts for short
videos and small segments on television
• Monitor news media and keep informed of current affairs and development issues
• Work closely with senior writing team to brainstorm ideas and review content
• Adapt to current voice and style

Skill set:

• Excellent writing skills and an ability to write both column-length and feature stories
• Good research and reporting skills
• Good journalistic intuition and the ability to build on suggestions provided
• Must be able to work with limited guidance.
• Editing experience

Qualifications:

• Strong knowledge of current affairs, political and social issues
• Hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent work experience
• Background, education and/or 2-3 experience with writing for a newspaper or magazine or related experience
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Able to meet demanding deadlines, producing high quality work and project a positive attitude
• Superior written and oral communication skills, with excellent command of the English language
• Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience
• Willing to be a dedicated member of the Free The Children team with a positive and flexible attitude.
