Job Opening: Copy Editor for Everyday Food Magazine

Primary Purpose

Copyediting and proofreading all Everyday Food content for clarity, in-house style, and grammar.

Responsibilities

Helps maintain voice and tone of magazine. Routes stories and assists managing editor in getting the print and digital issues shipped on time.

Requirements

Experience required

• Must have 3 to 4 years copyediting experience at a consumer magazine. Background in editing food-related material, including recipes, preferred, or at least some familiarity or interest in subject.
• Undergraduate degree in English or journalism or related field.
• Thorough knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style or Words into Type and copyediting symbols and terminology. Familiarity with food-related reference books, such as Food Lover’s Companion, a plus.
• Must be fluent in K4 and InCopy or similar publishing program.

Preferred qualities

• Must have strong written and oral communication. Pays close attention to detail, keeping a keen eye out for typos. Inputs changes into layouts accurately and quickly. Double checks work, and works with editorial and art teams to address copy fit or other story issues.
• Works well under deadline and can manage and prioritize multiple assignments.
• Willingness to help with other tasks as assigned by ME, such as writing small assignments for magazine and blog.
• Some experience with Web editing as well as fact-checking a plus.
