Job Summary
CMI seeks a self-motivated, highly organized, goal-oriented writer/editor to write and edit opinion articles and speeches for CMI leadership and to develop other written content in support of the organization’s communications department. This individual will write, edit and proofread print, online, and audio-visual materials designed for a range of external and internal audiences. He or she will work closely with CMI leadership and clinicians to communicate their expertise and/or vision to a larger audience, while also ensuring that print and online materials, as well as spoken remarks, are fact-checked and consistent with the mission and goals of CMI.
The writer/editor will also be responsible for keeping editorial and speechwriting projects on track by coordinating with other departments. This role requires the ability to facilitate—and sometimes anticipate—the needs of a fast-paced communications operation; after-hours availability is sometimes crucial. The writer/editor would perform other duties as assigned.
A successful candidate is someone who thrives without direct supervision, can adapt to constant change, and can juggle priorities while remaining calm and thoughtful under pressure. A positive attitude is key.
The writer/editor reports to the director of communications, and works closely with the editorial director of childmind.org and a staff writer, at CMI’s headquarters in New York City. This is an exempt, full-time position with competitive salary and benefits. CMI is an equal opportunity employer.
The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:
•Bachelor’s degree, plus additional related college courses or professional training.
•At least two years of professional experience in journalism or a related field in which writing, editing, and proofreading were the primary responsibilities.
•Experience publishing/editing/proofreading for print and online venues.
•Ghostwriting experience strongly preferred.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
•Experience with mental health, health, or other complex issues preferred.
•Ability to apply editing and proofreading skills in a deadline-oriented environment.
•Sensitivity to the evolving language of diversity and ability to incorporate that sensitivity into published materials.
•Ability to read, write and edit Spanish a plus.
•Candidate must pass an editing/proofreading test.
