Summary of Position
Performs thorough copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking to maintain the National Geographic's high standards of accuracy in photos, text, maps, and artwork published in NG KIDS and NG LITTLE KIDS magazines.
Responsibilities
- Copyedits and proofreads entire magazine for grammar, style, logic, and flow at various stages. Reviews and evaluates edited manuscripts and layouts, proofreads pages, makes spelling/style decisions and design consistency comments, and communicates queries to editors as needed.
- Fact-checks all NGK and NGLK features and some departments submitted by writers for accuracy, and reports suggested changes to editors on deadline. Assists editors with upfront story research. Verifies caption copy for photos, maps, and art. Researches editing changes at all stages of proof and answers editor queries as each story moves from edited manuscript through all stages of proof. Identifies any problem areas with photos or existing illustrations selected for publication as early in the publication process as possible. Assigns and supervises contract fact-checkers as necessary.
- Originates art and map concepts and compiles complicated art scrap to guide artists. Prepares visual source material when needed for designers and artists.
- Assists with special projects and leadership programs, supervised by the executive editor, including sponsored contests, Guinness World Records, cross-divisional projects, and online NG Kids material.
- Provides research and fact-checking assistance for custom-publishing projects. Finds accurate information for special promotions, inserts, and other sponsored material and ensures correctness of information provided by advertising/marketing. Provides upfront research for children's books projects as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in journalism, english or equivalent. Three years in print publications with at least one year fact-checking/copyediting experience
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
Exceptional copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking skills a must. Ability to communicate well with others, verbally and in writing, and to work well in a team environment. High computer literacy, particularly Mac platforms and InDesign software.
