Part-time Young Adult Pre-GED Instructor Needed at Brooklyn Public Library ($35 per hour)

The P/T Young Adult Pre-GED Instructor facilitates guided reading and writing instruction to a cohort of approximately 15 to 20 young adults (17 to 24 years old).

The instructor develops and implements literacy curriculum and lesson plans designed to engage struggling and reluctant readers, using technology and authentic reading materials. The instructor’s approach to literacy instruction includes a blend of Balanced Literacy and Youth Development Principles. The position reports to the YA Pre-GED Coordinator.

Responsibilities

* Deliver guided reading and writing instruction to cohorts of struggling and reluctant young adults.
* Implement literacy curriculum and lesson plans.
* Participate in the development of literacy curriculum.
* Conduct ongoing assessments and weekly individualized conferences with members of the cohort.
* Participate in weekly case conferences with the Project Coordinator and Advocate Counselor to jointly develop learning and social support plans for each cohort member.
* Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings to engage in reflection, planning and program improvement.
* Attend Professional and Technical support trainings offered by Youth Development Institute as scheduled.
* Maintain classroom supplies and metro card inventory via weekly visits to Administrative Office.

Requirements

* BA/BS required. MA in education a plus.
* Two years teaching experience with youth or adults required.
* Proven effectiveness with struggling readers.
* Knowledge of the GED Exam.
* Demonstrated understanding of reading and writing workshop model.
* Computer literate and knowledgeable in learning technologies.
* This is a $35 per hour grant-funded, part-time position (19 hours/week Monday – Friday).
