Vacancy: Publicist for Harlequin (Location: NY)

Harlequin is currently looking for an enthusiastic Publicist to join their fast growing and dynamic Non-Fiction publicity team.

The Publicist will help develop and implement the overall publicity strategy which encompasses media relations, event planning, author relations, newsworthy press releases, and related materials. He/she will disseminate press material and pitches to the media and follow up to garner media placement. Successful applicants must possess excellent oral and written communication skills; creative writing ability; project management experience; computer literacy, as well as experience with Social Media platforms including Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube. Must be team-oriented with a positive attitude.

Specific duties:

1. Assists in planning and executing publicity campaigns for non-fiction and some fiction titles
2. Pitches to national and regional TV, print, radio and online media and builds strong media relationships
3. Coordinates all publicity activities on assigned titles from the mailing of galleys to the development of proper angles and pitches
4. Works closely with Sr. publicity manager/editors, sales and marketing
5. Writes press releases, targeted pitch letters, author bios, and other publicity material
6. Plans and executes book promotion events like book signings and attends author tours and select author appearances
7. Creates targeted mailing lists & assists with maintaining the publicity database
8. Cultivates and maintains author relationships
9. Researches author appearance opportunities and other duties as required by Non-Fiction Team.

Skills and Experience Required:

• To be considered, applicants must have a minimum 3-5 years publicity, marketing or communication experience; book publicity a plus
• Strong knowledge of the following categories (memoirs, cookbooks, diet, fitness, self-help, motivational and relationship books and some fiction).
• Strong pitching technique and proven ability to generate creative story angles
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Strong organizational skills & ability to focus on details a must
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Cision and Publicity Assistant

Education requirement:

A BA or BS in public relations, communication, journalism, or related field is required.
