Bad Shoe defines “female” as any individual who primary views themselves as feminine. Queer-themed or gender-questioning subject matter is welcome. The editors prefer to print work that is not strictly defined as feminist. Although we value art by women about women, we wish to show that women’s art is as universal and encompassing as that of men. Our target audience is literary rather than feminist. We encourage you to browse the gallery (under construction) or pick up an issue before submitting.
Although Bad Shoe is currently a quarterly journal focusing on the St. Louis region, we plan to print national submissions by our 10th issue. We are currently accepting national submissions.
Writers may submit 3-5 pieces as individual MSWord or OpenOffice documents. Currently we are accepting submissions via email attachment. Although we primarily print poetry, we will accept short fiction, flash fiction, non-fiction, and criticism if the pieces fit the tone of our journal. While we don’t have a line or page limit, we rarely print pieces that are more than 2500 words (around 5 standard pages).
Artists may attach 3-5 examples of their work as JPG or PDF for consideration. However, we usually request that the featured artist of each issue eventually contribute a cover design and 6-8 pieces for the issue. The co-ed issue features 1-2 pieces from multiple artists. Standard issues feature only one female artist. Editors collaborate with the artist to choose featured pieces. The artist has the option to provide a one-page written statement for inclusion in the issue.
Writers and artists: please include “Bad Shoe Submission” as the subject of your email. Your name should appear both in the file name and in the body of the document. Please include your 75 word bio in the body of the email or as an attachment.
