The Eludia Award for a Woman's First Book-Length Unpublished Novel/ Story Collection

Post date: 19 February 2012
Deadline: 15 March 2012

Hidden River Arts is pleased to announce our launch of The Eludia Award for a first book-length unpublished novel or collection of stories. The prize is open to women writers age 40 and older who do not yet have a book-length publication. The winning manuscript will be published through Hidden River Publishing, on our Sowilo Press imprint, and will receive a $1000 prize and ten copies of the book in addition to publication. We will be accepting manuscripts until March 15, 2012. Winners will be announced October 8, 2012.

Founding Director, Debra Leigh Scott, says, “The Eludia Award is dedicated to the memory of my material grandmother, Eludia Marie Orgoglioso, born at the turn of the last century in Abruzzi, Italy. She lived her life at a time when women had little opportunity to follow their dreams; and although she loved the arts all her life, she was never able to pursue them beyond her wide-ranging reading of literature and volunteer singing in her church choir. This award has been created to support the many women who, while living in a different and more “modern” time, still meet with delays and obstacles in discovering their creative selves. It is a tribute to my grandmother, and a tribute to all women artists.”

The entry fee is $25, and online submission is highly encouraged.

Guidelines and Application Form

Manuscripts and all application materials, including payment, should be submitted online. Documents should be submitted in Word, PDF or text format.

All manuscripts must contain a synopsis of the entire book, whether it is a collection of short stories or a novel. It must include a character breakdown.

Please also include information about whether any portion of the book has been published, including the publication date and publisher’s contact information. (i.e. if your book is a collection of short stories, were any of the stories published, and if so, when and where? The same would apply for excerpts of your novel.)

We request a brief bio AND a resume. The reason for this is that our mission is to reach writers outside of the MFA programs and traditional writer-spots. We want to be sure that we are reaching out into a broader population of writers - the resume would show what you do as a vocation, and the bio should focus on what is NOT your vocation, but your passions, your avocations, your fuller and broader life in the world. We, obviously, request a birthdate to be sure that you meet the requirements for the award. (Note: We request a birthday for all our competitions, once again to be sure that we are reaching the greatest diversity in age ranges.) The bio and resume should be attached with the manuscript and application form below.
