Write for Galavanting Online Women's Travel Magazine (rate: $50 for features)

Post date: 24 May 2011
When it comes to travel, we believe women are interested in more than just fashion, style columns, and reviews of ludicrously expensive resorts. Are you a first-timer, just back from your first trip abroad? Or have you spent enough time living abroad to have the insight of a local? Or are you an adventurous jet-setter who has traveled all over the world for work or pleasure?
We want your travel essays and travel tips. Published and unknown writers are invited to submit.

There are several areas in which you can participate:

* Feature Travel Essays: bring readers along on your journey and provide plenty of practical links to the places you visited so they can see it for themselves.
* Blog Posts: Write about your trip while you’re on the road. Fun cultural observations accompanied by quirky or picturesque photos are what we’re after.
* Women-Owned: write about an awesome woman-owned business in a travel destination that no traveler should miss while on their trip.
* Travel Tip: contribute a quick, informative travel-savvy bit of knowledge you’ve picked up along the way.

Use the guidelines below as a jumping off point. One thing we really appreciate is originality. And don’t feel limited to “girlfriend group” travel or solo travel, we’d also love to hear about your trip as a couple, or with your family.

We accept submissions for new features, blog posts, and travel tips on an ongoing basis.

Finished pieces or idea pitches should be emailed to us with a short introduction about yourself and links to any previous published writing, if you have it. Make SUBMISSIONS the subject heading of your email. If you have photos of the destination you describe, let us know.

Feature travel essays (600-1200 words) are paid $50 within 30 days after publication. Published travel tips and A View From Abroad blog entries (200-500 words) are paid $15 each within 30 days after publication.

If we accept your article or idea, we’ll send you an email letting you know and ask for any additional information. If we agree to read your article based on an idea pitch, we are under no obligation to publish it. We do not re-publish stories that have previously been published on any blog or other websites. However, you are free to repackage the same trip or tip with a fresh take and then submit it.

We have a very high volume of email, so if we haven’t responded to your submission within three weeks, please assume we can’t use it on Galavanting and feel free to submit your story elsewhere.

Take a while to familiarize yourself with the site, and then check out the style of writing we publish below:

Travel Essays & Blog Posts

We love lighthearted, witty essays giving a flavor of the place you’ve been. Your writing should also reflect on of how you’ve learned, grown as a person, or broadened your horizons through travel. What surprised you? What disappointed you? What made you never want to come home? Be honest, realistic and personal in tone.

Re-experience your travels through the written word, allowing those who haven’t been anywhere yet to have the trip of a lifetime. Keep in all the juicy details and show us your personality. Don’t be afraid to be a little saucy. We want to know. Be sure to also include tidbits about your favorite travel tips and tricks along the way. Or if it was your first time traveling abroad, give other women a heads up on which mistakes not to make.

If you have photos to accompany your article, please let us know, we’d love to see if we can include them. Essays are published our features section. If you’ve got a quick observation during one of your journeys email it in, for the A View from A Broad blog (be sure to let us know where you’re writing from and include a pic if you can!). Essays are between 600-1200 words. Blog entries are 200-500 words.

Women-Owned Business Profiles

Whether it’s a killer good food stall in Thailand or a woman-owned hotel in Paris, we’re always on the lookout for women-owned businesses. As part of enhancing the experience of women travelers, we want to help them connect to unique experiences and support other women.

Infusing a bit about her personal flair or a quote from a brief interview would be a nice addition, but this is not a biography of the businesswomen. Tell us what makes it a great place, why it’s unique and why readers should take time to visit this business.

This is not a review of the business, but more an informational article about the business itself. We don’t need negative critiques of bad places, just info about great ones. If you have photos to accompany your article, please let us know, we’d love to see if we can include them. Venture Profiles are between 300-800 words.

Travel Tips 101

To create a community of better informed and prepared women travelers, we are looking for travel factsheets on important logistical issues pertaining to women. These can cover amusing topics such as how many/what kind of shoes to bring to serious topics on health and safety. Make sure to cover all the nuts and bolts and to specifically state if your tips address travel generally, or travel to a specific place.

Look up some examples at Travel Tips 101. Travel tips should range from 200-600 words.
