Post date: 20 April 2011
Deadline: 22 April 2011

Women, men and teens who have directly or indirectly been affected by sexual assault are encouraged to use poetry as an outlet to express their story of survival and empowerment. Students at Truckee High School in collaboration with Tahoe Women's Services will choose the top three poems which will be showcased at the Take Back the Night: The Art of Empowerment event which will include a Speak Out at Fat Cat Café in Tahoe City, Wednesday, April 27, 6-8 p.m. Submissions are confidential and poets may choose to remain anonymous.

Submissions can be sent to tsbths@gmail.com or mailed to Tahoe Women's Services at 948 Incline Way, Incline Village, NV 89451 by April 22.

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month. To bring awareness locally to this devastating crime that affects one in six individuals, Tahoe Women's Services will feature poetry about empowerment and survival as part of its annual Take Back the Night event. This year's event is themed The Art of Empowerment and focuses on the power of bystanders to prevent sexual assault in our neighborhoods, communities, workplace, and schools. Take Back the Night: The Art of Empowerment will feature a Speak Out in which community members who have been affected by sexual assault can share their stories, and Poetry Contest winners will be able to share their work. The event is free and open to the public.
