Guidelines for Submitting a Feature Article:
Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting is interested in feature articles in many subject areas. We will look at historical stories, humorous pieces, articles on patchwork, appliqué, quilting, and other related techniques, and inspirational stories. Other topic areas could be unique quilt guild activities, profiles of interesting quilters, and quilting trends.

We prefer feature articles that are visual rather than text heavy. Before you submit a feature, think about the visuals that will best illustrate your story and include your recommendations. Visuals may be photographs or illustrations. Perhaps you know an illustrator that can produce the right images. If you are able to provide visuals, your story has a better chance of acceptance.

Familiarize yourself with Love of Quilting to get an idea of the kind of articles we are currently publishing. If you wish to subscribe, you can call 1-888-985-1020. The “on-the-spot” special is $15 for one year if you pre-pay.

Length of articles can be from 250 to 1000 words, depending on the topic. Here is a published page breakdown that might help you in planning a story:
250–300 words (including captions) 1 published page 1–2 images
500–600 words (including captions) 2 published pages 2–4 images
750–1000 words (including captions) 3 published pages 3–6 images
Over 1000 words (including captions) 4–5 published pages 5–10 images

Submissions must be typed and double-spaced. If accepted, you will be asked to e-mail the text or send the file on disk in MS Word.

Along with your submission, please include a cover letter giving us brief information about yourself as well as your contact information.

We will get back to you as soon as possible regarding the status of your submission. Keep in mind that materials must be routed to our entire editorial team, so it may take weeks (or months) for you to receive a response.

Guidelines for Submitting a Quilt Project:
1. Submit a clear photograph that shows your entire quilt. It’s okay if the photo is of an unquilted top. We apologize that we cannot return photos and that we are not always able to acknowledge unsolicited submissions. We prefer snapshots rather than digital files. If you take a digital photo, please send us a color printout rather than a disk.

2. On the back of your photo, clearly print your name, address, phone number, the quilt's dimensions, and its name. You may use a pre-printed address label on the back but be sure to write the other information down as well.

3. Include a one-page letter about yourself; whether you are a professional or amateur quilter, if this quilt has been published, if the quilt has won any awards, if you own your own shop or pattern company, etc. Be sure to include a phone number where we can reach you during the day. Include e-mail addresses and fax numbers, if applicable.

4. All quilt submissions must be original designs or traditional patterns. Do not submit quilts that you have made from published instructions. Adaptations of designs from other published materials are derivative works. Be prepared to answer questions about your source of inspiration. If someone else’s pattern is your starting place for a design, it may be possible to get permission to publish if permission is gained in advance and credit is given in the magazine.

5. If your quilt has appliqué or requires templates, pieces must fit in a 7.5" x 10" area.

6. We generally pay a $200 honorarium to publish your quilt. We buy all rights but we can often license back to you the right to teach the project in your classes, and other rights.

7. You are required to send us basic instructions for your quilt. Our staff will edit instructions into our magazine style.

8. If published, we will need to keep your quilt for six to eight weeks for photography and instruction development.

9. If we decide to publish your quilt, we will contact you. We apologize for the many weeks it may take us to get back to you. Often, we keep submissions on file for possible future use.
