About the Job
The Staff Writer reports to the Managing Editor with responsibility for writing stories and other content primarily for Hue magazine, and additionally for other uses in a variety of communications in the Office of Communications and External Relations.
Responsibilities include:
* Conceptualizing, planning, researching, developing, and writing news and feature stories; conducting interviews with high-level alumni, business leaders, college administrators and faculty;
* Supporting the magazine’s editor by helping to set the direction of each issue through the choice of subjects, development of story list, and layout ideas;
* Conceptualizing photo and artwork ideas and overseeing photo shoots as needed; assisting with the selection of images;
* Maintaining relationships throughout the institution and proactively drawing on knowledge of all areas of the college, the Museum at FIT, and related industry to support story research and development;
* Maintaining day-to-day contact with the design team on issue production; reviewing and commenting on layouts; assisting with fact-checking and proofreading;
* Acting as a departmental reporter by attending various college activities to cover events for the magazine and other departmental communications;
* Repurposing and/or developing content for uses in other departmental communications such as web pages or press releases.This is a general description and is not all-inclusive.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field and a minimum of 3-4 years writing experience, preferably on a magazine or other type of periodical
Demonstrated writing capabilities through samples of published material
Strong, editing, grammar, proofreading, and research skills are essential
Working knowledge of magazine production and publication design processes, including layout development, photography, and graphics strongly preferred
Previous experience in higher education or knowledge of industries related to FIT’s areas of study a plus
Additional Information:
Days & Hours: Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm
Salary: Schedule 93 ($55,804)
Effective: Immediately
