Responsibilities:

Editorial

• Plan and execute the content development of the online and print magazines, setting editorial agenda, working with teens to develop proposals, and taking features throughout the editorial process. This entails an editorial process with college and high school writers/editors, followed by a second edit to prep each piece for publication.
• Write Editor’s column.
• Oversee email submissions process to ensure timely action and response.
• Execute all editorial production, from conceiving editorial calendar and agenda to proofreading and checking.
• Submit pre-publication review of controversial content to Executive Director for final approval to ensure feedback from diverse points of view and appropriate content based on girls’ experience.
• Create new editorial initiatives with input from teen editorial board and staff, ensuring that editorial fulfills commitments to funders on plans for the year.
• Investigate new and emerging technologies and introduce new elements of online journalism to teenvoices.com.
• Take the lead in ensuring compliance with copyright, trademark and related intellectual property laws and best practices. Production
• Create, manage and maintain deadlines for Teen Voices print and online production in order to meet organizational deadlines.
• Hire photographer to shoot magazine covers, supervising photo shoot and ensuring high quality images and layout.
• Create, manage and maintain procedures and policies related to production and style guidelines.
• Work with a design consultant for print magazine and tech consultants, if needed, for online magazine as well as web and print redesign related to strategic planning priorities. • Manage archives of electronic files and editorial content.
• Manage all metrics for print and online publications, ensuring completion of funder requirements. Supervision and Mentoring
• Supervise and train AmeriCorps*VISTA Marketing Coordinator, volunteer college mentors, and editorial interns.
• Manage design and editorial consultants.
• Supervise and train the Teen Editorial Board to generate sufficient, appropriate content for teenvoices.com, and to develop both journalistic and organizational skills.
• Oversee communication from organization with teen writers and artists who contribute to Teen Voices and teenvoices.com.
• Conduct editorial trainings and orientations for mentors and editorial interns, and teen editors covering such issues as editorial duties, media literacy and publication production. Readership and Revenue Development
• Develop strategies to increase ad revenue, distribution and readership.
• Work with Executive Director and development staff to creatively identify ways to increase revenue for membership and sponsorship through magazine. Management
• Serve as part of the Management Team leadership to oversee organizational planning, budgets and program coordination/implementation.
• Prepare and edit data for proposals, reports and other fundraising/marketing materials as needed.
• Work with Program Director to ensure coordinated programming.
• Represent Teen Voices at meetings or public events as necessary.

Qualifications:

• Five to ten years’ experience in journalism with some experience in both print and online. Experience working with design and photo staff.
• Ability to relate effectively to a culturally and economically diverse community of teenage girls and adults necessary.
• Experience selecting and supervising volunteers and interns.
• Ability to work independently and effectively toward multiple deadlines in different areas (program and editorial).
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice essential including interest and commitment to progressive politics related to women and girls.
• Proven record of increasing readership and magazine revenue.
• Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, editorial style, and punctuation, including the ability to write in a clear and lively style.
• Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with everyone from co-workers to teens.
• Proficiency with online publishing platforms, particularly WordPress.
• Experience with Photoshop and manipulating images for online and print purposes.
• Must demonstrate a strong comfort level with new media.
• Experience with social media and ability to work with Marketing Coordinator to maximize potential for growth and networking
• Experience with blogging and interest in growing fledgling blog.
• Significant management and supervisory skills necessary.
