Job Responsibilities
The Fashion Editor for ESPN The MAGAZINE will manage the editorial vision for style, fashion and athletes found within the magazine. This person will also oversee the editorial vision for our digital platforms of The Magazine such as mobile, iPad and online. This person will have to provide creative vision and ideas for these multiple platforms. The candidate will style shoots with athletes, as well as other creative processes involving the pages of the magazine. This position requires a passion for sports and also in-depth knowledge of the major sports.
This person will also: gather content and coordinate coverage; work to expand and make coverage more comprehensive, using multiple platforms, including video, audio, and text; work with staff writers, editors and freelancers; generate story ideas; contribute to special features and stories; and edit multiple stories, among other duties.
He or she will may be responsible for editing copy for The Magazine and other digital platforms to ensure established tone, theme, accuracy, style and consistency requirements are met. This person will also write blurbs, blogs and features; enhance existing material; contribute to creating a positive multimedia experience for users of The Magazine’s various platforms.
Required Qualifications
• 5+ years in the fashion community as an editor.
• Advanced competence in writing, editing and reporting.
• Advanced appreciation of popular culture, e.g., "what's cool" and contributes to an understanding of the tastes of ESPN's audiences.
• Advanced ability to follow and shape stories at various stages of development using various means of presentation.
• Advanced news journalism experience and news judgment; understands assigned sport from a journalistic point of view, but is not locked into the newspaper tradition.
• Advanced understanding of HTML and Internet/mobile publishing tools.
• Strong English grammar, strong understanding of AP style and excellent organizational skills.
• Strong ability to work efficiently under deadline pressures.
• Has familiarity with most major Internet search engines and fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet.
• Strong understanding of some or all major sports, as well as a working knowledge of athletes, coaches, league operations and the like.
• Some travel required, as well as excellent communication skills and team player attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelors’ degree or higher in journalism, communications or a related field.
• Contacts with American & European designers.
