Director of Editorial - Fashion and Beauty (new site)

Demand Media is creating a new online destination dedicated to promoting beauty both inside and out. The efforts will include the development of an interactive web property, an engaging online video series and unique mobile applications.
Demand Media will create a new digital brand that will be inherently social, highly interactive and grounded in delivering content and experiences that respond to real consumer demand. Demand Media will leverage its leading content creation platform, social media tools and application development expertise to aggressively build a unique online destination that will launch later this year.
This position is located in Santa Monica, CA and reports to the General Manager of Demand Media's new Beauty and Fashion Platform.
Responsibilities:
* Own the overall content experience for Demand Media's new Beauty and Fashion Platform, while creating best practices and examples to drive the content implementations across other Demand Media properties; this includes working closely with other key departments such as Product and SEO to identify requirements
* Own the focus, vision, standardization and implementation of content across all relevant Demand Media and third-party properties.
* Oversight of all functions that support the acquisition, quality, and experience of content across all platforms (e.g., wired, mobile, email)
* Provide editorial leadership and active engagement with Product, Marketing, Community, PR, Engineering, SEO and FBO teams
* Ownership of the packaging and presentation of content on the website
* Work closely with Demand Studios to give clear, ongoing direction on content (text, video) to meet the platforms' overall brand, quality, payback, and goals
* Work closely with Ad Sales team to create sellable feature video in Beauty and Fashion verticals
* Manage the voice and evolve the editorial style guidelines and formats, both for text and video
* Provide direct management and give editorial direction and strategy priorities for the platform's Content team
* Develop content production strategy/plan by identifying content gaps and performing ongoing quality audit
* Work closely with internal and external teams to define content strategy
* Responsible for content team’s execution of content strategy
* Identify processes/tools to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the content team
* Provide input and direction on the expansion of the site’s taxonomy
* Ownership of the editorial budget and budgeting process
* Track and understand performance of content based on traffic and revenue
Requirements:
* 10 years of experience in an editorial environment, with strong writing, editing and reporting background
* 6 years of significant management experience fashion publisher.
* Experience developing a content strategy around branded ad sales.
* Experience developing a content strategy around Facebook.
* Proven understanding of social media and networking.
* Must have proven press/speaking training and experience.
* Experience working with freelance writers, making assignments and providing feedback
* Ability to balance several projects at once while working in a deadline-driven environment
* Understanding of online publishing and the competitive landscape
* Efficiency, accuracy, organization skills, dependability, attention to detail
* Solid Microsoft Office skills (other software knowledge a plus)
* Internet savvy, with basic understanding of the principles of online publishing
* Journalistic curiosity and energy to discover new and exciting topics
* Proven experience working with a content management system
* Familiarity with AP style or other publishing style manuals
* Strong interpersonal skills and experience collaborating in a team environment
* Knowledgeable in SEO, user generated content etc.
* Experience in organic traffic growth management
* Strong management and project management skills
