Real Simple Home Department Assistant Editor responsibilities

We’re looking for an organized, creative person with at least two years’ experience covering the home market (furniture, accessories, tabletop, and gift) for a shelter or lifestyle magazine (preferably shelter). Ideal candidates would have contacts and relationships in the home market, plenty of experience organizing and tracking products for shoots, and the experience and/or skill to write short copy blocks.


  • Perform market work and create boards for features and FOB departments, including Trends Worth Trying, Personal Shopper, and Road Test.
  • Attend desk sides, press previews, market events, and trade shows in search of new products and trends.
  • Call in products for all Home stories, and return products in a timely manner.


  • Secure credit sheets for all products featured in the Home department.
  • Maintain the magazine’s monthly Credits page.
  • Conceive, research, and write weekly Daily Finds for realsimple.com.
  • Pitch story ideas.


  • Schedule department meetings.
  • Arrange for messengers; pick up packages from messenger center.
  • Work with photo and art departments on shoot logistics (getting products to the studio, assembling products, etc.).
