Job Description

The Senior Web Editor is responsible for organizing, developing and leading the programming of the assigned Web site to ensure alignment with brand objectives, usage and engagement growth, content integrity, style and voice of site and its partners.

The Senior Editor maintains the integrity of the content and functionality of the site and leads programming by other Web editors for the site to deliver on internal and external goals and schedules.

In this position, the Editor also may be directly responsible for organizing, developing, editing and managing the publication and maintenance of Web content for the site. The Editor must ensure all programming and content is posted in a manner that keeps the site timely and current, and that the editing and production delivers programming that meets all internal and external commitments.

The Senior Editor will identify and work to fill site coverage gaps, as well as propose and participate in creation of new products and programming initiatives. The Editor will guide, edit and direct the web editor(s) on the team to ensure completion of all assigned work and the quality of those executions. These executions will include everything from expanded syndication and packaging efforts to development of original approaches and archival concepts. Emphasis will be placed on those efforts providing timely content that grows overall site usage, pageviews and visits.

The Senior Editor’s daily duties may include the following:

1. Organize, edit, copyedit, manage, and track performance of all Web content to the assigned site.

2. Ensure all deadlines are met for the site, especially when related to timely and current coverage as well as content associated with special packages and sponsored site components and sections.

3. Write and edit promotional blurbs to promote content and follow up with Web editors to ensure the content is posted as planned.

4. Update content to keep the site current, ensuring prompt elimination of any technical or content errors, or content that is out of date or no longer functional.

5. Assist when needed to identify, recruit and manage Web editors and freelance contributors.

6. Check, edit and post archive content to ensure a steady stream of fresh material and to ensure all schedules are met for delivery and maintenance.

7. Partner with the Photo and Video editors and other site editors to get additional photos, video and other content when appropriate to the coverage and packaging of content.

8. Develop, plan and deliver impactful and topical homepage content, including poll questions, specials packages, etc., that engage visitors and boost traffic.

9. Work with the magazine staff to create unique opportunities for programming and interaction between the Web and the other media, and to create web programming to supplement high-value magazine content.

10. Work with all digital departments to develop Web-only or Web-extra content, and follow through with the development and posting to meet agreed production deadlines.

11. Attend regularly scheduled meetings for all print and Web teams as required.

12. Select syndication content and related links for all syndication partners and email products. Ensure assigned sites review and update syndication content or linked email content as needed.

13. Repackage content as needed for seasonal special sections, for syndication and in other cases as needed to support sponsorship and partner opportunities.

14. Write, edit and post original blog items articles and other content, and edit and post blogs and stories from editors and contributors. In some cases, this involves follow up with outside production resources to ensure content is posted properly in a timely fashion.

15. Provide leadership, development and management of the assigned Web programming team.

16. Work with all Hearst Digital Media teams to develop, create and implement new concepts for site designs and new product initiatives.

17. Monitor and edit social media programming and promotion, and guide magazine staff in contributing to social media.

18. Research, track and update content pages to optimize site content for search performance.
