Vacancy: Senior Associate Editor for Focus on the Family (Colorado)

General Purpose/Summary Statement:

Focus on the Family is seeking an experienced editor to conceptualize and develop compelling content for Thriving Family magazine. Responsibilities include researching and brainstorming magazine content ideas, assigning articles, editing and proofreading copy, and keeping abreast of trends and issues that concern our target audience.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

-Creates original copy organizes facts interview quotes and other material into the most compelling form

-Edits manuscripts from in-house and freelance writers

-Fully participates in editorial and design meetings

-Develops story ideas for the magazine and website that are consistent with their missions

-Proofreads copy at various stages of development to ensure quality consistent with Focus on the Family standards and principles

-Maintains currency with target audience through extensive reading personal contact and Internet research

-Consults with legal counsel on article content as required

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

-Performs other duties as assigned

Managerial Breadth/Scope of Job:

-None – responsible for own work

-May have some oversight of interns related to the editorial content of the magazine and the Web site

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:

-Office environment
-Occasional travel at the Editor’s request

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge/Experience:

-Bachelors Degree in Journalism or English
-4-6 years successful writing experience
-Working knowledge of FOF mission philosophy values and objectives

-Excellent listening skills
-Ability to function effectively and efficiently in a team environment
-Ability to handle constantly changing priorities and demands
-Ability to organize work effectively to meet demanding time constraints
-Ability to clearly articulate and to defend a position
-Exceptional use of the English language punctuation and sentence structure
-Ability to apply imaginative approaches to others’ ideas
-Competent in use of PC/Macintosh software

Internal candidates will be given first consideration for this position.

The starting salary for this position is $3740 per month.
