Summary of Position
Conceptualizes and develops interactive, age-appropriate games, activities, and stories, and assists senior editors with editorial and office tasks on magazine special projects. Performs thorough fact-checking to maintain the National Geographic's high standards of accuracy in photos, text, maps, and artwork published in NG KIDS and NG LITTLE KIDS magazines.
Responsibilities
- Assures the quality and timely delivery of NGK Fun Stuff department and NGLK pages as assigned. With supervision from the executive editor, coordinates the projects from start to finish, including working with supervisor and project team to coordinate communication among staff, ensure accuracy and quality of published material, and manage work flow.
- Fact-checks departments and some feature stories submitted by writers for accuracy and reports suggested changes to editor on deadline. Assists editors with upfront story research. Verifies caption copy for photos, maps, and art. Researches editing changes at all stages of proof and answers editor queries as each story moves from edited manuscript through all stages of proof. Identifies any problem areas with photos or existing illustrations selected for publication as early in the publication process as possible. Writes as necessary.
- Originates art and map concepts and compiles complicated art scrap to guide artists. Prepares visual source material when needed for designers and artists.
- Assists with special projects and leadership programs, supervised by the executive editor, including sponsored contests, Guinness World Records, cross-divisional projects, and online NG Kids material.
- Manages interactive and electronic magazines and databases. Assists social media editor in collecting creative assets, editing video, managing contracts, and proofreading content for any electronic magazines and mobile apps. Maintains story grids and banked folders.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in journalism, english or equivalent. One to two years' related office experience, with at least one year of magazine involvement. Demonstrated magazine writing experience.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
Ability to communicate well with others, verbally and in writing, and to work well in a team environment. Creativity in writing, editing, integrating words and pictures, and problem-solving. High computer literacy, particularly Mac platforms and InDesign software.
