Reporting to the Publisher, the Editor of Kayak will be a key member of the History Society’s management team and will be responsible for guiding the editorial vision and design of their unique children’s magazine, and its online extensions. You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining editorial standards, setting annual and longer-term goals and budgets, commissioning articles and liaising with authors, and overseeing the timely production of the magazine. You will also have responsibility for overseeing the Kayak Kids’ annual illustrated story-writing challenge, and working to develop strategies for educational use and classroom engagement.
As the ideal candidate, you have a minimum of 5 years experience as a children’s magazine, educational resource, or book editor, and have a passion for Canada and its history. You are a well-organized, with strong relationship-building and decision-making skills, and are best known for your imagination, creativity and ability to make learning fun.
You have an acute understanding of production costs, advertising and budget management balanced with knowledge of children’s publishing industry trends and a keen eye for relevant content. In addition to strong interpersonal communication skills, you have an outstanding command of the English language. As well, a working knowledge of French and website design and editorial development would be considered strong assets.
While ideally located in Winnipeg, the successful incumbent may be contracted as either staff or freelance from anywhere in Canada.
