Seeking Submissions for PHOEBE: Intersectionality and Creative Narrativity

Post date: 22 October 2010
Deadline: 31 October 2010

This issue of PHOEBE will explore the topic of Intersectionality and Creative Narrativity. As scholars and artists in the fields of social sciences, liberal arts and applied human sciences, we conceptually interact with a variety of theoretical frameworks, among these intersectionality has become key to understanding not only gender and sexuality, but ability, class, religion, nation status, and racial/ethnic identities, as well. Resultantly, the manner in which intersectionality may be displayed, digested and disseminated is important to review as a means of linking theory with praxis.

This issue of Phoebe is dedicated to understanding how narratives and creativity, in terms of novelty, effectiveness and authenticity, contribute to intersectional theories, including feminist theory, critical race theory and queer theory. Does creativity influence our storytelling (thoughts-in-process), or does narrativity impact our creative expression (identity-in-process)? Additionally, how do the various forms of narratives, whether they be visual, oral, written or a blended format, interact with our creative expression of intersectional identities or realities? What constitutes creative narrativity, i.e. what does it look, sound, feel like, and how is it constructed? In what ways do narratives (Stories, autoethnographies, digital murals, photonovelas, slam poetry, etc…) provide theoretical avenues for understanding intersectionality? How is intersectionality displayed within narratives?

PHOEBE: Gender and Cultural Critique is a peer reviewed journal celebrating over 20 years of publication. We invite submissions from scholars, poets and creative writers examining the concerns of gender and cultural critiques from a range of disciplines and perspectives. Topics can include, but are not limited to: Narratives containing intersectional identities or realities; creative narratives as a space for analyzing intersectionality in praxis; creativity within narratives using feminist, critical race, and/or queer theory; intersectionality as a framework for storytelling.
