Founded in August 2008, we have published five online issues so far. We are currently publishing biannually, in November and May.
We are now inviting submissions for our November 2010 issue. The deadline is the 20th October. Please follow the guidelines below.
Fiction: We are looking for original fairy tales in short story format (max 3000 words). We also accept flash fiction. Please note that although we welcome works inspired by a love of traditional tales we are not looking for retellings or reimaginings. New Fairy Tales is working to promote the writing of a generation of new fairy tales. If you want to find out more about what we think constitutes a fairy tale and a little bit about the history of fairy tales please click here. We'd also recommend that you spend some time reading from our current and previous issues. Please submit all queries and work with 'Fiction', then, 'Title / Surname' in the subject line of your email.
Poetry: We are looking for fantastical poetry that explores what a new fairy tale can be, but as per our guidelines for fiction you should refrain from retelling or reimagining existing tales. All forms of poetry are acceptable. Please submit queries and work with 'Poetry', then, 'Title / Surname' in the subject line of your email.
Illustration: We are looking for illustrators who enjoy creating fairy tale inspired work and who are up for the challenge of working to a very tight deadline to produce illustrations for the selected stories and poetry. Please submit queries and examples of your work, or a link to your online gallery, with 'Illustration' in the subject line of your email.
Other: We are also very interested in new fairy tales in forms that don't easily fall into any of the categories above, such as comic strips, illustrated stories told without words, short films, music, and multimedia work. The work doesn't necessarily have to be suitable for inclusion within the standard format of the magazine but could be published alongside it. Please submit all queries and work with 'Other' in the subject line of your email.
All submissions, and queries about submissions, should be sent to the editors at: newfairytales@gmail.com
Please send text either in the body of your email or attach it as a Word document.
We prefer previously unpublished work. We will accept simultaneous submissions but please let us know in your submission email and contact us to withdraw your work asap if it is accepted elsewhere.
We want as wide an age group as possible to be able to enjoy our magazine so please bear this in mind when submitting work.
Copyright remains at all times with the author/illustrator and we ask our readers to respect this. Unfortunately we are not able to offer payment for work published in the magazine as New Fairy Tales is free to download and run on a voluntary basis, but we do ask readers to make a small donation to Derian House Children's Hospice to show their appreciation, so if selected your work is supporting a very worthwhile cause.
When you've submitted your work you can expect to receive an acknowledgement email from us within a week (and if you don't please feel free to contact us again to check your email hasn't gone astray). We prefer to wait until all the submissions to an issue are in before making our final decisions so you will hear back from us after the closing date.
