Intern/Scholarship Program for Female Students (sponsored by the Association for Women in Sports Media)

Post date: 17 September 2010
Deadline: 31 October 2010

Since 1990, AWSM has placed more than 100 female college students interested in sports media careers in paid internships with employers such as Sports Illustrated, ESPN and some of the country’s most respected daily newspapers.

Deadline is 10/31.

This year, AWSM will be expanding its internship program in hopes of offering scholarships to more than a dozen deserving students. The top applicant in public relations, broadcast, writing and copy editing will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship in addition to a paid trip to the 2011 AWSM Convention in Charlotte, which includes hotel stay, reimbursement for travel and free convention registration.

All other students chosen for an AWSM internship will receive a $500 scholarship.

Former AWSM interns now work at top media organizations like the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, The Associated Press, The Washington Post, the Boston Globe and ESPN. During the summer of 2010, AWSM placed interns at ESPN, Sports Illustrated, MLB.com, the Salt Lake City Tribune, USA Track and Field and the Colorado Springs Gazette. Eligibility

* Applicants must be full-time female students seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree during the 2010-11 academic year.
* Previous winners are not eligible.
* Membership in AWSM is not required. However, applicants can join AWSM for just $15 in addition to their $20 application fee.

Selection

* AWSM board members and appropriate media professionals will serve as judges.
* Applicants may be contacted by phone for an interview.
* All intern placements are final decisions, made jointly by AWSM and the employer.
* Interns are expected to serve a full term with the employer.
* Interns will receive half of their scholarship money at the start of the internship and the remaining half upon completion of the internship.

Question: How does AWSM determine at which media organization each intern is placed?

Answer:
In some categories, the top candidate, as determined by a panel of media professionals and AWSM board members, will be offered an internship at an organization that has agreed to host an intern. In other categories, the top candidates will be asked to accept a spot in the AWSM program before they are placed in a specific internship. Some winners will be asked to choose among host organizations after reviewing information about the organizations and the internships they offer.

Question: Which media organizations will be involved in the 2011 program?

Answer:
Employers for 2011 have not been finalized. However, employers such as Sports Illustrated, ESPN and some of the country’s most respected daily newspapers have hosted interns in the past.

Question: Can AWSM guarantee winners will be offered an internship in their preferred region of the country?

Answer:
No.

Question: When and how will I find out whether I have been selected?

Answer:
All applicants will be notified by e-mail or phone. Please check our home page for regular updates on the status of the selection process. Due to the high volume of e-mails, AWSM board members may not be able to respond individually to all queries.

Question: Can I apply in more than one category (e.g. writing and broadcast)?

Answer:
You are more than welcome to submit a separate application for more than one category.

Question: Do you offer internships in times of year other than the summer?

Answer:
AWSM is in discussion with employers who might offer internships lasting longer than summer break and/or in alternate seasons. At this time, however, AWSM will not be offering anything other than summer internships.

Question: Are current college seniors eligible?

Answer:
Yes. Any students attending college full-time during the 2010-11 school year are eligible. That includes students who graduate in December 2010.

Question: What if I’m unable to upload my resume, letter of recommendation and work samples?

Answer:
Applicants should e-mail the program coordinators at internships@awsmonline.org if you encounter any problems.
