The Mom Egg seeks poetry, fiction and creative prose for our 9th annual issue, The Mom Egg 2011. Submissions period opens Aug. 1, 2010; the deadline is Oct. 31, 2010.

The Mom Egg publishes sharp, articulate, inventive work by mothers about everything and by everyone about mothers and motherhood. (This means if you are a mother, you can write about anything, but if you are not a mother, your piece must relate somehow to the subject of mother). We want work that is compelling, honest, skillful, and which by its strength and originality supports our conviction that an eclectic, diverse, mother-centric publication is necessary and vital!

The best way to know what we’re looking for is to read The Mom Egg —excerpts are published on the site, but you’re encouraged to purchase an issue, and to subscribe to The Mom Egg, either for yourself or as a gift.

Please submit by email to info@themomegg.com; put “Submission 2011 Poetry” (or Prose, Fiction, Art) in the subject line. Please include contact information and a 3-5 line bio. in your email. (We select work based on the work only, but it’s handy to have the bio).

Words

Please send material that has not previously been submitted to The Mom Egg.

Send your submission as a rich text or .txt file or a Word doc. attached to your email. Please name the file “Your Last Name-poetry ” (or fiction, or prose, etc.). Put your name on your submission attachment. Simultaneous submissions okay, but let us know immediately if your piece is accepted elsewhere. No prior publication (except on your own blog okay).

Poetry
Up to 5 poems.

Flash Fiction
Up to 750 words; one piece per submission period.

Creative prose
Up to 750 words; one piece per submission period. We tend to publish pieces that read like stories rather than opinion essays.

Other submissions:
Guest blogs are featured on the website http://themomegg.com. Opinion essays are welcome as submissions for guest blogs, as are other forms. Please label your submission as “Guest Blog Submission” in the subject line.

Book reviews; interviews; literary criticism
We can publish reviews of books by or about mothers; interviews with mother-writers or artists. 750 words max. Please query before sending.

Visual art
up to 5 images
Please send an email with bio and info about pix (title, medium, copyright info if any). Send actual files by yousendit.com or other file sending program. Send pix no more than 300 dpi—if your pic is chosen we may ask you to send a larger file.

Other material (audio, video, etc.)
Please inquire.

We choose pieces based on artistic merit. We are a labor of love, and are unable to pay for pieces at this time.

The Mom Egg acquires first-time publication rights to the piece. We also reserve the right to republish it in a future electronic and/or print edition or anthology. Back issues are archived indefinitely. Rights return to the author after publication: authors retain their copyright, so after their contribution has appeared in The Mom Egg, they may republish their text in any manner they wish—electronic or print—as long as they clearly acknowledge The Mom Egg as its original place of publication.
